Gonzaga tops DeMatha for WCAC title

As the biggest game of his basketball career unfolded Thursday night, Gonzaga's Sam Miller sat stewing on the bench, watching as his teammates traded blows with DeMatha in a thrilling marathon of a Washington Catholic Athletic Conference boys' basketball championship.

The Eagles senior had determined that a nagging ankle injury wouldn't hold him back in the all-or-nothing contest, but when foul trouble sent him to the bench during a critical portion of the second half, Miller was left to ponder just how he could impact what had turned into a contest of wills.

"I knew I would get back in the game eventually. When I did, my coaches told me I had to step up," Miller said. "Once I got there, I was just in the moment."
