Gonzaga captures WCAC boys’ cross-country title; St. John’s wins girls’ event

Gonzaga celebrated its second straight Washington Catholic Athletic Conference boys' cross-country title Saturday afternoon at Bull Run Regional Park in raucous fashion, with team members singing a joyous, if off-key, rendition of the Eagles' fight song while hoisting their new hardware.

The trophy might be new, but the ritual was familiar — it marked the Eagles' sixth WCAC title since 2008, a level of dominance Coach John Ausema attributes to his runners' dedication to the sport.

"We've got an atmosphere that we've built in our program that is just about working hard," Ausema said. "So once you have the momentum of a few guys that take it seriously, they tend to bring everyone else along."

Gonzaga placed four runners among the top 11 on the 5,000-meter course to win with 34 points. St. John's (49) was runner-up, and Bishop O'Connell (80) took third.
