WCAC tennis: O’Connell’s team, Gonzaga’s Dominick Perez win titles

WCAC tennis: O’Connell’s team, Gonzaga’s Dominick Perez win titles

As word spread Sunday afternoon that O'Connell had just clinched the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference boys' tennis title at Olney Manor Recreational Park, several of the players surrounded center court and urged on the Knights' No. 1 doubles team.

And when O'Connell senior Patrick Hughes and freshman Erick Rivas defeated top seeds Dominick Perez and Tommy Clare of Gonzaga, 10-3, the doubles sweep was complete.

"I knew from the beginning how talented we are," said Knights sophomore Gianni Snidle, who teamed with freshman Shaun Freeman to clinch the title at No. 3 doubles. "It feels amazing."

O'Connell finished the singles portion of the tournament trailing Gonzaga by one point, but it won all three doubles flights to capture the conference title for the first time since 1982. The Knights finished with 35 points, followed by Gonzaga (27) and Good Counsel (22).

"This is the most unique team I've ever had," Knights fifth-year Coach Mark Borgiasz said. "We can compete up and down the lineup. It's something we've never had before."
